You can claim a dependent if they meet IRS criteria as either a qualifying child or a qualifying relative. Generally, a dependent must:
Be a U.S. citizen, U.S. resident, or resident of Canada/Mexico.
Not provide more than half of their own financial support (for qualifying relatives).
Live with you for more than half the year (for qualifying children).
